Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy has been around for quite some time now and has been extensively studied to prove it's safety and effectiveness.

Simply put, it's a series of processes that use electrical stimulation and certain techniques to help your body into an auto-pilot healing state.

If you have a joint or muscle problem as a result of an injury, we recommend you try electrotherapy because it many benefits.

Electrotherapy can help you manage pain symptoms, reduce oral pain medication usage, increase your activities of daily living, and assist with the overall rehabilitation process.

In fact, patients who have used electrotherapy to manage their pain symptoms have seen some amazing results, including:

Reduction of pain level by 86%.

Increased activity levels by 65%.

Reduction of oral medication use by 50%.

Reduction of medication costs by 55%.

The Science Behind Electrotherapy

Research shows electrotherapy manages pain symptoms using two different principles - the Gate Control Theory, and the Endorphin Release Theory.

Gate Control Theory

GCT focuses on how the brain senses pain. At the sight of pain or injury, the pain signals travel along the nerve fibres to the spinal cord and are relayed up the spinal cord to the brain.

The gate control process involves stimulating the sensory nerves with electrical impulses, thereby creating a tingly sensation. This sensation then ravels along the sensory nerves to the spinal cord.

When the tingly sensation reaches the spinal cord, it causes a gate to close on the pain signal. This presents the pain signal from travelling up the spinal cord, and instead of feeling pain, the brain feels the tingly sensation from the electrical impulses.

When this technique is used, pain relief is felt in minutes and continues while the sensory nerves are being stimulated.

Endorphin Release Theory

This principle is based on stimulating the motor nerves, which causes the body to release endorphins.

It works by applying electrical stimulation to the painful area and increased to a level to produce a muscle twitch. After some minutes of stimulation and a muscle twitch, the body starts to produce endorphins which are the body’s own natural pain killers.

They are released throughout the body to contain the pain from any joint or muscle. Pain relief is felt after 20 - 30 minutes and can last for hours after treatment.

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy is both science and art. Not everyone is qualified to operate electrotherapy machines, and great care must be taken for an effective and safe treatment.

Here at Align Motion, we have trained professionals who will use this therapeutic technique to provide pain relief and help restore your healthy lifestyle.

Our Electrotherapy modalities include the following:

Interferential Current Therapy (ICT/IFC)

The most common type of electrical muscle stimulation used to treat chronic pain resulting from surgery, injury or trauma. ICT/IFC provides higher frequency current that penetrates deeper into the tissue with less discomfort.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

This is a form of electrical stimulation used to manage chronic and acute pain. It involves passing electric jolts in a specific frequency range using the TENS unit.

Light Therapy

This is another electrotherapeutic modality we employ in treating chronic pain associated with injuries. It involves the use of Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER), Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), or any other light sources to injured tissues and joints.

Ultrasound

This electrotherapy modality involves the use of a hand-held transducer on injured areas. It has been approved by the FDA for a variety of therapeutic uses including thrombus dissolution, fracture healing, and the treatment of epicondylitis.

Shortwave Therapy

This involves the use of electromagnetic shortwave frequencies. These frequencies are interpreted as significant heat on the affected area and are absorbed by the tissue. Controlled exposure to the area induces a natural healing effect.

What To Do Next

We first must determine if Electrotherapy is right for you. The modality we employ is dependent on our initial consultation session with you and the physical assessment of the affected area.

After an assessment, we draft a suitable treatment plan - using any of the modality listed above - that is best suitable for your complication.

Visited today at the Westmead clinic (think they have 3) it's in such a great place and super conveniently located. Free underground carpark and easy access. The clinic is very nice and unlike other clinics this place has a great aesthetic. The physio Varun was amazing, super friendly and gave me a good analysis of my shoulder injury. Told me to what I had to do to rehab and said within 3-5 treatments I should be well on the way to recovery. What I really appreciated was that unlike other physios he didn't rush the session and took his time to get to know about how I got injured and my needs, then advised me on how to prevent it in the future.

I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with Matt at Alignmotion for my neck pain. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming feeling by the staff which instantly made me feel comfortable. Matt was extremely knowledgeable and professional, and his expertise truly shined through during my massage session for my terrible neck pain I've been experiencing for weeks. He was able to pinpoint the source of my neck pain and provided targeted relief that made a world of difference. I left feeling rejuvenated and like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I highly recommend Matt and Alignmotion for anyone looking for effective and welcoming treatment for their aches and pains.
